How to care for your padel racket: longevity secrets from the pros

14/01/2026 115

A padel racket is your primary ally on the court, and the effectiveness of your game depends on it. But did you know that its core (EVA or FOAM) is a "living" material that reacts instantly to sun, moisture, and cold? Improper storage quickly strips the core of its elasticity, triggering unwanted vibrations. These can lead to epicondylitis (commonly known as "tennis elbow").

Ignoring basic care rules is a direct path to frame cracks, balance disruption, and ultimately, premature expenses on a costly new purchase. In this article, we will break down how to keep your equipment in "like-new" condition for as long as possible.

Padel Racket Care Rules

1. Critical Temperatures: Enemy №1

Under the influence of heat (for example, in a car interior during summer), materials soften, causing the racket to lose power and control while increasing the risk of internal damage. Conversely, in freezing temperatures, the equipment loses elasticity and shock-absorption capacity, which can lead to micro-cracks even during standard hits.

We advise avoiding aggressive thermal exposure. Store your racket at room temperature (18-24°C) and use specialized thermal covers or bags with thermal compartments. They create a stable microclimate and prevent the racket from softening in the heat or becoming excessively brittle in the cold.

2. Protection Against Moisture

Moisture is a silent enemy of padel equipment, capable of altering the balance and physical properties of even the most expensive models in a short time.

The core of the racket has a porous structure; therefore, excessive air humidity or playing in the rain causes the EVA foam to absorb micro-droplets of water, making it heavier and causing it to lose its "memory" (the ability to instantly regain its shape). This creates excessive strain on the player's elbow due to a shift in the center of gravity and increases the risk of injury.

To avoid the negative impact of moisture, we recommend wiping the racket with a dry microfiber cloth after every match. Do not leave a wet racket in your bag—be sure to dry it before putting it away. Use waterproof covers for storage.

3. Sweat Control

Sweat is an aggressive form of moisture that attacks your racket first through the overgrip. Even the highest-end model loses its effectiveness if the handle becomes slippery. Furthermore, the salts and moisture contained in sweat gradually destroy the structure of the wrap, making it unfit for play.

To maintain perfect grip and dryness, we recommend following these tips during play:

  • Use wristbands — they block sweat from flowing down the forearm to the handle.
  • Wipe your palms and the handle with a towel during breaks between games.
  • Apply specialized anti-slip gels and sprays: such as Bullpadel Dry Grip, which instantly dries the palms, or the professional series from 4on (TotalGrip Paste or Spray). These products create a thin water-repellent layer on the overgrip that improves adhesion and prevents sweat from seeping into the handle.
  • Replace the overgrip regularly. This renewal not only restores the sense of control but also prevents moisture from penetrating deep into the base of the handle, protecting it from rot and deformation.

4. Protection from Sand and Dirt

Small particles of sand and dust get trapped in the perforation holes and micro-cracks, acting like "sandpaper": they scratch the protective lacquer, destroy graphics, and can eventually lead to the delamination of composite layers. Dirt accumulating on the surface changes aerodynamics and friction upon contact with the ball, negatively affecting the quality of spin. To minimize this impact, never place the racket directly on the court surface or a bench—always use a cover or hang it by its wrist strap. After playing, clean the surface with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth, paying special attention to the holes.

5. Frame Protection: The Role of Protectors in Longevity

During a padel game, the frame is constantly at risk of mechanical damage. Contact with glass walls, metal mesh, or accidental strikes against the court surface leads to scratches, chips, and, most dangerously, cracks in the carbon fiber. Using specialized protectors (protective tapes) for the upper part of the frame is a mandatory standard for preserving the integrity of the equipment. This lightweight but durable accessory acts as a shock absorber, absorbing impact energy and protecting expensive composite materials from structural failure. Experienced pros emphasize: it is much cheaper to replace a worn protector in time than to buy a new racket due to irreparable frame damage.

Racket Care Checklist

Racket longevity starts with basic maintenance:

  • After every game: Wipe with microfiber, dry the overgrip, place in a thermal cover.
  • Once a week: Check the integrity of the frame protector.
  • Every 3–5 games: Replace the overgrip (or more often if you feel slipping).
  • Always: Avoid aggressive thermal exposure, storing the racket at 18–24°C.

When is it time to buy a new racket?

Even with flawless care, every racket has its operational lifespan. On average, with regular training (2–3 times a week), a racket maintains its peak characteristics for 8 to 12 months. For professionals, this period may be reduced to six months, while for amateurs, the equipment can serve for up to 1.5–2 years. The Fun Padel online store recommends looking for physical signals:

  1. Change in sound: The sound of the hit changes from crisp to a dull, "hollow" sound (similar to hitting cardboard). This is a sign that the core has lost its resilience or has delaminated from the carbon frame.
  2. Increased vibration: If you feel an unpleasant "rattling" after a hit that resonates in the wrist or elbow, this indicates micro-cracks in the structure. Playing with such a racket is a direct path to injury.
  3. Loss of "Pop": You notice that you have to apply significantly more effort for a standard ball exit. This means the core has lost its "memory" and no longer returns the energy of the impact.
  4. Visible structural damage: Surface scratches in the lacquer are normal, but if you see cracks originating from the perforation holes or along the frame, the structural integrity is compromised, and the racket could break at any moment.

Do not wait for the total destruction of your equipment. Timely replacement of a racket that has started to "fatigue" will protect your joints from harmful vibrations and allow you to maintain a consistently high level of play.
